Best Places To Travel During The Holidays With Your Family ...

Article by Joyce Jackson

Thinking about taking your family on a Christmas vacation?

Although it has long been tradition to wait at home for Santa to arrive, a number of American families spend Christmas away from home each year. Christmas vacations are becoming more and more popular and you will likely find that there is a wide variety of fun holiday vacations available to you.

What better place to visit during the holiday season than the North Pole ? North Pole, New York that is. Located in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, North Pole is one of the most magical places to visit during your Christmas vacation. Perfect for kids and kids at heart, North Pole is open for five weekends prior to Christmas during November and December.

Visitors are offered Christmas vacation packages that include meals, lodging, and admission to Santa?s workshop. Santa?s Village features shops where you can find the perfect souvenir from your Christmas vacation. There is often live music to keep the crowds entertained and you and your family can enjoy watching glassblowers, puppet shows and other holiday entertainment.

If New York state seems a little far from the real North Pole, try getting a little closer to the real thing by visiting North Pole, Alaska on your Christmas vacation. The Alaskan vacation package also includes a visit to Santa?s house in the North Pole. Also offered is an optional dog sled ride through Santa?s village in the North Pole. Enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience as you race through the magical North Pole on an authentic Alaskan dog sled. Like the vacation package in North Pole, New York, the Alaskan North Pole offers one or two night stays during weekends.

The Alaskan North Pole Christmas vacation includes hotel accommodations in nearby Fairbanks and at the Chena Hot Springs Resort. There is also lodging available at the Santaland RV Park. The Santa House also offers a large store where guests to the North Pole can find every type of souvenir from ?I Believe in Santa? hats to ?Santa Claus Crossing? signs and refrigerator magnets. Whether you are two or ninety-two the magic of Christmas in North Pole, Alaska will have you believing in Saint Nick.

If you are traveling before or during the Christmas season, then consider Hershey, Pennsylvania as your vacation destination. The home of Hershey?s candy, Hershey Park becomes home to Christmas Candyland, where over one million Christmas lights are put on display. In addition to the lights, the staff at Hershey Park constructs a number of animated displays that are sure to delight both you are your children.

Christmas Candyland is undoubtedly one of the most exciting Christmas time getaways for kids young and old. In addition to Christmas Candyland guests can enjoy the rest of the Park. Hershey Park is a popular destination for travelers year round, as it offers a wide variety of both entertainment and great candy. Christmas Candyland typically runs for a month prior to Christmas.

If your family has never taken a Disney vacation, Christmastime may be the perfect time to do it. In addition to enjoying the Walt Disney World parade which is televised each year from Disney World in Orlando, Florida, your kids will also enjoy seeing all their favorite Disney characters decked out in their Santa hats and Christmas outfits. There are also a number of special Christmas time shows put on in the parks including Mickey Mouse?s ?Twas the Night Before Christmas and Belle?s Enchanted Christmas Storytelling.

These Christmas activities can be great for young children. Giant Christmas trees are erected throughout the parks and lit up with thousands of Christmas lights, bringing the spirit of Christmas alive throughout the already magical Disney World. The weeks around the Christmas season are also times where lodging rates at Disney World resorts are typically lower than the peak season rates.

By traveling during the Christmas season you are likely to get tons of fun at a reduced price. The weather in central Florida during the Christmas season is typically in the mid-70s, a great change of pace if you are used to cold, wintry Christmas seasons. Santa?s sleigh may have some trouble landing without snow but the magic of the Christmas season is alive and well at Disney World.

Clay Aiken Says Rihanna Has 'Pitch Problems'

'American Idol' alum takes shots at Rihanna, admits to plastic surgery.
By Gil Kaufman

Clay Aiken knows about competition. The TV veteran was not only a runner-up on the second season of "American Idol," but he's also hanging tough on the 12th season of "Celebrity Apprentice."

But during an appearance on Bravo's "Watch What Happens Live," he told host Andy Cohen that there's one person he's not worried about competing with: Rihanna.

The dis came when Aiken was on the hot seat in the "plead the fifth" segment. When asked which current pop singers wouldn't make it past the first round on "Idol," Aiken said, "Oh God, there is too many. Too many ... Current pop singer? I've stopped listening to them because they can't sing."

Then he thought about it for a second and said, "Rihanna has some pitch problems for sure. She does ... Now, am I gonna get in trouble?" The openly gay singer also had a unique answer to the "marry, kill, screw" question, when asked who he would choose between former tormentor and ex-"Idol" judge Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest. "Oh gosh, that's awful, I wouldn't want to kill any of them," he said. "I'm gonna kill Simon, because it's the obvious choice ... Of the two that are left, I would probably screw Ryan and marry Randy. That's the obvious choice, right?"

As if he hadn't revealed enough, when asked if, as rumored, he'd ever had any plastic surgery, Aiken at first demurred, then admitted, "I had surgery on my jaw for a TMJ thing and I had them suck the fat out of my chin while they were in there. I was like, 'You know what? While I'm already down, go ahead and take the vacuum in there and suck the fat out of my chin.' "

(AP) ? Decisions are still pending on a possible appeal of Sean Payton's suspension or an interim coach should his season-long punishment be upheld, a person familiar with the situation said.

The person says Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis and their staffs were in meetings at the team's suburban headquarters Thursday and focused primarily on preparations for next month's NFL draft. The person spoke to The Associated Press Thursday on condition of anonymity because the Saints have not announced their plans.

"Everyone is working hard, in draft meetings, et cetera ... trying to get better," the person said.

Payton's suspension in connection with the Saints' bounty scandal is slated to begin on Sunday, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has said he has until Monday to appeal.

Payton has sought advice on the matter from his friend and retired coach Bill Parcells, who has told several media outlets he'd consider taking the Saints' interim coaching job if Payton, his prot?g?, asked him to take over.

"I had plenty of opportunities to do things with different teams, and I've turned them all down," Parcells, who turns 71 in August, told the New York Daily News. "But this one is special. This guy is like family to me. And if I could help him, I would."

Payton began working with Parcells in 2003, when he was hired as an offensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys. The two have been close ever since and Payton, throughout his six seasons as New Orleans' head coach, has continued consulting his mentor on numerous matters, including how to handle preparations for the 2010 Super Bowl.

However, the Saints must clear up several matters before they can choose an interim coach. They must not only decide whether to appeal, but would have to see if an appeal resulted in a reduced punishment.

If Payton's punishment is upheld, the Saints could then proceed with finding an interim coach either from their own staff or outside the organization. If the Saints choose the latter approach and Parcells becomes a top candidate, the club would still have to interview a minority candidate under the NFL's "Rooney Rule."

"I don't know how this is going to play out," Parcells, who was a Hall of Fame finalist this year, told the newspaper. "I really don't know anything about the situation. There's a lot of things going on here, and I would suspect it's going to take a while to all sort out."

There are also three strong candidates among Saints assistants to take over as interim coach: offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo and offensive line coach Aaron Kromer. Payton expressed confidence in the abilities of his own assistants to compensate for his absence, but also has voiced some misgivings about saddling those coaches with additional responsibilities.

"We feel like we've got a number of good candidates" on the staff, Payton said earlier this week at NFL meetings in Florida. "The trick then is what it does to affect their roles that they currently have."

The appeal process itself, should Payton choose that route, is not expected to give him much additional time to work. Goodell has said he would expedite that process, indicating that it is highly unlikely Payton would be able to keep working through the draft in late April if he files an unsuccessful appeal.

That is why Payton is spending long hours with Loomis, other coaches and scouts reviewing draft prospects this week. Payton said he has also laid out plans for the offseason training program and the beginning of training camp, up until the Saints play Arizona in the Hall of Fame game Aug. 5 in Canton, Ohio.

If this is indeed Payton's final week of work in 2012, Loomis will be able to oversee the draft and handle other roster moves up until the season starts. Then he is slated to serve his eight-game suspension for failing to put a stop to the bounty system in a timely way. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt, who also coaches linebackers, is facing a six-game suspension.

The NFL's investigation in New Orleans found that Payton initially lied to league investigators about the existence of a bounty and instructed his defensive assistants to do the same. Payton twice apologized for his role in an enterprise that offered payouts for knocking out opponents, saying he takes "full responsibility" for a system that operated for three years under his watch.

The NFL has said as many as 27 players also could be sanctioned for their role in the scandal.

Ben Zweifach: Whatever the Court's Ruling, the Political Battle Over Obamacare Has Already Been Lost

As the Supreme Court debated the fate of the Affordable Care Act this week, anxiety spread throughout the leftward legions. Progressives, liberal elites, those who reject labels but still love Downton Abbey -- we've all become antsy. And here's a spoiler alert: The situation is actually worse than people think. Whether Justice Kennedy wakes up on the left or the right side of his bed this summer, the Court's ruling will hurt President Obama's campaign. The reality is that the political battle over Obamacare has already been lost.

This has nothing to do with Solicitor General Verrilli's performance this week. Depending on whom you ask, Mr. Verrilli's defense of the individual mandate resembled something between a mildly alarming debacle and the causeway ambush of Sonny Corleone in The Godfather (see below for a visual approximation of Verrilli's oral argument).

The SG proved incapable of articulating a limiting principle to cabin Obamacare under the Commerce Clause, and the aggressiveness of the inquisition was disturbing, particularly to those in the room. Granted, the news sensationalizes everything, but some of the legal correspondents returned to their network studios looking like shell-shocked soldiers trying to describe the horrors of 'Nam to their families. CNN's Jeffrey Toobin wore a particularly squeamish expression as he described the events: with the sound off, he could well have just witnessed Verrilli be covered in barbeque sauce and dunked in a tank of piranhas. And the definitive evidence things didn't go smoothly? Rachel Maddow spent the first half of her show preemptively attacking the institutional integrity of the Court and ranting about Bush v. Gore; Sean Hannity spent the first half of his show laughing maniacally and tossing around his idiotic toy football, as though he'd just found tape of the president with a goat.

But however Kennedy comes out, the Court's apparent decision to reach the merits is bad news for the Administration. Let's consider the nightmare scenario first. Say Kennedy decides to shred the ACA, turn it into his own personal wallpaper, and redecorate his chambers with it. It would be catastrophic. To be a bit rude for a moment, those arguing that this would actually help Obama get re-elected are either fools or deluded contrarians. (Don't kill me in my sleep, James Carville!)

First, the holding would announce to the world that Obama is, at least by constitutional metrics, outside the mainstream (read: a radical). It would vindicate every nutty right-wing pundit who has claimed that he is not only a liberal president, but somehow an illegitimate one operating outside the bounds of the law. This would be the story, even if it's an unfair oversimplification of the truth. In reality, would invalidation be anything other than another judicial overreach by a politicized court, akin to Citizens United? No, not really. But presidential martyrdom rings hollow, and trying to sell that explanation in swing states would be like trying to teach mandarin to a badger.

Second, invalidation would wipe out the principal political achievement of Obama's first term. A year-and-a-half of his presidency, the period during which he was attacked for prioritizing his party's holy grail over the economy: gone -- as though he'd spent it playing MarioKart or devising his March Madness bracket. It would be an indictment of his stewardship and managerial competence. Say what you will about the ideological composition of the Court, but if such an outcome were so predictable from the judicial personnel, shouldn't the president's lawyers -- hell, Constitutional Law Professor Obama himself?! -- known not to prioritize such a doomed crusade?

Third, a federalism-based rejection of the ACA dovetails nicely with the Romney campaign's healthcare talking points. So far, Mr. Romney's only answer to the Romneycare-Obamacare coupling has been an unconvincing, federalist distinction: that his health law was good for Massachusetts but bad for the nation. A Commerce Clause takedown by the highest court in the land lends that response some legitimacy: The federal government isn't authorized to issue an individual mandate, whereas Massachusetts is. (Mitt's known it all along!) Romney's been searching for evidence that something insidious happens when you apply a state healthcare plan to the entire country. Even if the Court's word is based on law more than policy, it would qualify.

And what if the Court upholds the ACA? The ruling would be a rallying cry for conservatives and a boon to right-wing turnout in November. Obamacare is an unpopular piece of legislation, and has been one from the start. You wouldn't quite call it a political lemon, but it's probably fair to say it's evolved into a strain of tangerine. An ABC/Wash. Post poll from last week finds that a majority of Americans want it repealed, and two-thirds want the Court to throw out at least part of it. If you're running a re-election campaign, time spent defending something 2/3 of the country wants invalidated is dicey territory; David Axelrod would likely prefer his candidate talk about other things -- like the auto-rescue, or financial reform, or maybe the most recent Mad Men episode.

And yet, before reaching the Court, the ACA had lost resonance since the midterms. Romney's impending nomination alone is proof that the histrionic fever over Obamacare had passed into remission. A summer ruling revitalizes the debate, injecting it back into the news without Romney having to expose himself to the hypocrisy of insurance mandate attack ads. The Court will do it for him, whatever the holding. Justice Kennedy could write a glowing opinion, seal it with a kiss, and attach a 'Yes We Can!' pin; it won't matter.

The ACA has unfortunately gone from polarizing to a political liability, and the Court's ruling is going to end up damaging the president's chances in November. That much is a foregone conclusion.

Business Risk Management | Capitol Drive -

The government team Mijas City Council is studying the profitability of the possible transfer of business risk management of public lighting in the municipality to an ESCO ? Energy Service Company ? for which the councilor Jose Francisco Ruiz Fontalba invited the operators of this sector to present their initiatives and proyectos.Una THAT is a company that "provides services or energy efficiency improvement" and that "accepts some degree of financial risk in doing so", and its benefit resulting from the decline in consumer bill of street lighting. That is, an ESCO would provide street lighting, make investments to provide this system-edge technology to save electricity in order to reduce costs and amortizing its economic stake and also would be responsible for maintaining the network . In return, the City would disburse less money for electricity bills at present and also would save the cost of maintenance. "There is a close decision, but we are studying the possibility to save as much as possible," said Councilman Lighting, Jose Francisco Ruiz Fontalba, who stood at an amount close to 30 percent decline of municipal expenditure in this regard. In addition, the mayor said that along with economic benefits for the municipality, public lighting management by an ESCO generate environmental benefits, "because that would avoid more polluting emissions to the environment." Ruiz asked Fontalba ESE operators "to visit us and explain the services we offer," and stressed that if the government team finally decides to hand over the operation of street lighting, "No worker should fear for his City Council job. Health care arguments: Can any portion survive?

(AP Photo/Carolyn Kaster)

(AP) ? The Supreme Court signaled Wednesday that it could throw out other key parts of President Barack Obama's health care law if it first finds the individual insurance requirement unconstitutional.

On the third and last day of arguments, the justices appeared to accept the administration's argument that at least two important insurance changes are so closely tied to the insurance requirement that they could not survive without it.

Less clear was whether the court would conclude the entire law, with its hundreds of unrelated provisions, would have to be cast aside.

The justices also spent part of the day considering a challenge by 26 states to the expansion of the Medicaid program for low-income Americans, an important feature in the effort extending health insurance to an additional 30 million people.

The court's liberal justices made clear they will vote to uphold the Medicaid expansion, which would take in 15 million people with the federal government paying almost all the costs.

Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer voiced strong disagreement with the states' contention that the expansion of the joint state-federal program is unconstitutionally coercive.

"Why is a big gift from the federal government a matter of coercion?" Kagan asked.

The day's earlier session was unusual in that it assumed an answer to the central question in the historic health care case: that the requirement that Americans carry health insurance or pay a penalty will be struck down. In fact, if they follow their normal practice, the justices have not even met yet to take a preliminary vote in the case.

Audio of Wednesday morning's argument can be found at:?http://apne.ws/GX1p23 .

In their questions, the liberal justices took issue with Paul Clement, the lawyer for the states seeking to have the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act tossed out in its entirety.

"What's wrong with leaving this in the hands of those who should be fixing this?" asked Sotomayor, referring to Congress.

Chief Justice John Roberts also spoke about parts of the law that "have nothing to do with any of the things we are" talking about.

For example, Ginsburg observed that the act deals with issues such as black lung disease.

"Why make Congress redo those?" she asked. "There are many things" that have "nothing to do with affordable health care."

But Clement said the court would be leaving "a hollow shell" if it decided to excise the several key provisions. "The rest of the law cannot stand," he contended.

Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy also asked hard questions of Deputy Solicitor General Edwin Kneedler that indicated they are at least considering Clement's arguments. Kneedler said that the only other provisions the court should kill in the event the mandate is stricken are revisions that require insurers to cover people regardless of existing medical problems and limit how much companies can charge in premiums based on a person's age or health.

Justice Antonin Scalia suggested many members of Congress might not have voted for the bill without the central provisions, and he said the court should not go through each and every page to sort out what stays and what goes.

"What happened to the Eighth Amendment?" Scalia asked, referring to the Constitution's ban on cruel and unusual punishment. "You really expect us to go through 2,700 pages?"

As the arguments resumed Wednesday morning, a smaller group of demonstrators than on previous days gathered outside.

Supporters of the law held a morning news conference where speakers talked about the importance of Medicaid. And, marching on the sidewalk outside the court, supporters repeated chants they've used the past two days including "Ho, ho, hey, hey, Obamacare is here to stay." Most of their group departed not long after arguments began inside.

Opponents of the law, including Susan Clark of Santa Monica, Calif., also stood outside the court. Clark, who was wearing a three-cornered colonial-style hat, carried a sign that read "Obamacare a disaster in every way!"

"Freedom, yes. Obamacare, no," other opponents chanted.

The first two days of fast-paced and extended arguments have shown that the conservative justices have serious questions about Congress' authority to require virtually every American to carry insurance or pay a penalty.

The outcome of the case will affect nearly all Americans and the ruling, expected in June, also could play a role in the presidential election campaign. Obama and congressional Democrats pushed for the law's passage two years ago, while Republicans, including all the GOP presidential candidates, are strongly opposed.

But the topic the justices took up Wednesday only comes into play if they first find that the insurance mandate violates the Constitution.

The states and the small business group opposing the law say the insurance requirement is central to the whole undertaking and should take the rest of the law down with it.

The federal appeals court in Atlanta that struck down the insurance requirement said the rest of the law can remain in place, a position that will be argued by a private lawyer appointed by the justices, H. Bartow Farr III.

On Tuesday, the conservative justices sharply and repeatedly questioned the validity of the insurance mandate.

If the government can force people to buy health insurance, justices wanted to know, can it require people to buy burial insurance? Cellphones? Broccoli?

Audio for Tuesday's court argument can be found at: http://apne.ws/Hft6z3.

The court focused on whether the mandate for Americans to have insurance "is a step beyond what our cases allow," in the words of Justice Kennedy.

"Purchase insurance in this case, something else in the next case," Chief Justice Roberts said.

But Kennedy, who is often the swing vote on cases that divide the justices along ideological lines, also said he recognized the magnitude of the nation's health care problems and seemed to suggest they would require a comprehensive solution.

And Roberts also spoke about the uniqueness of health care, which almost everyone uses at some point.

"Everybody is in this market, so that makes it very different than the market for cars or the other hypotheticals that you came up with, and all they're regulating is how you pay for it," Roberts said, paraphrasing the government's argument.

Kennedy and Roberts emerged as the apparent pivotal votes in the court's decision.

Nothing says spring equinox like Marimekko

Google celebrates the spring equinox with a colorful doodle based on the floral and fauna designs of Marimekko, a Finnish company renowned for its bold 1960s patterns. ??

Google celebrates the spring equinox ? the ?first day of spring ? with a splash of colors and designs by Marimekko, the Finnish design house.

If you are a fan of "Sex and the City," shop at Crate & Barrel, or remember the 1960 sartorial choices of Jacqueline Kennedy, you will recognize Marimekko's distinctive patterns. ??

Marimekko embrace of bold colors and design began in 1951. It was the middle of the post-World War II reconstruction, and?founders Vilio and Armi Ratia tapped into Finland's longing for a fresh start and brighter colors.

Marimekko products ? the name literally means "Mary?s dress" in Finnish ? ?first gained fame beyond Scandinavia in 1957 when the company was invited to to a fashion exhibition in Milan, Italy. The show was cancelled, but the garments were showcased by Giorgio Armani, then store manager of Rinascente,?a luxury department store in Milan.?

Ratia?s entrepreneur acuteness combined with bold textile designs would transform the company into ??one of the true icons of a very particular era: the idealistic, vibrant days of the 1960s? wrote Ivar Ekman in the New York Times.

With the vision of pioneering Finnish textile designers Maija Isola and Vuokko Nurmesniemi, Marimekko introduced bold fabrics that revolutionized the industry and became synonymous with dynamic women.

Ms. Isola designed the famous Unikko (poppy) print pattern in bold red, pink, and black on white, a pattern still in production.? Nurmesniemi created the red-and-white striped Jokapoika shirt, a landmark product in the company?s history.

Marimekko entered the American market via its exclusive commercial representative, architect Benjamin C. Thompson, who displayed Marimekko products prominently in his Design Research retail stores.? However, it was Jacqueline Kennedy who gave them nationwide fame during the 1960 presidential campaign when she was featured in a Life magazine cover wearing a Marimekko dress. ??

The company?s expansion continued and Crate and Barrel established a lasting business relationship with Marimekko that goes back in 1966.

Marimekko's own catalogue consists of clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags, and other accessories.?

During the 1990s, the company experienced financial woes that brought it one step short of bankruptcy. But under the strong stewardship of Kirsti Paakkanen, Marimekko regained financial footing and its brand momentum.?

In the late 1990s, the company resurged in popularity in the US with the help of the TV series "Sex and the City" when the main character, Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker), repeatedly wore Marimekko clothes.

These days, with the rediscovery of the 1960s and 1970s fashion, Marimekko is again in the spotlight. ??We have realized that hard-edged modernism needs softening, so that it gets a human feel. Marimekko does that very well," said design historian Charlotte Fiell, according to the New York Times.

The Helsinki-headquartered company has 90 stores around the globe.?

10 Important Questions You Should Ask Before You Begin Any Home

Deciding what to prioritize when it comes to your home improvement budget can be a big decision and one that might make your head spin. Don?t worry if you are confused about which direction to go first, as prioritizing your home improvement jobs is no easy task. A multitude of factors goes into deciding what home improvement tasks should be at the top of your list. Let?s briefly look at a few of the key considerations you should have when thinking about home improvements.

1) Is the home improvement necessary? This is an important question, and it can really cut to the heart of the matter. Understanding why you want to make a given home improvement is vitally important. In the case of adding insulation to your home, you can start saving money virtually immediately. The U.S. Department of Energy provides a handy equation for figuring out the payback period for insulation at. [1]

2) Is the home improvement valuable?

3) Will a given home improvement improve the quality of my life and the life of my family? If a home improvement doesn?t improve your quality of life, then you need another good reason to proceed with a project.

4) Is the home improvement I am considering realistic?

5) Is the home improvement I am considering cost-effective? This question can be tricky, as many home improvement projects can seem cost-effective only to turn into ?money pits.? You definitely don?t want that to happen to you!

6) Could I be spending my home improvement dollars in a better and more productive fashion?

7) How long can I expect a given home improvement to take? A large home improvement project such as a basement remodeling or kitchen remodeling can take a lot of time. Are you ready for that commitment?

8) Are there any potential health impacts to my home improvement ideas?

9) Do I need to consult experts or multiple experts regarding a given home improvement?

10) Will the home improvement I am considering increase my resale value?

Asking yourself these ten questions about the home improvement projects you have in mind will go a long way in helping you make your decisions. Home insulation should rank high on your list of home improvements due to the fact that it answers so many of the questions in a positive manner.

It makes sense to consider the state of your insulation both in the fall and the spring. For example, you should consider caulking seals and weatherstripping and do a simple attic inspection every year in the fall. [2]

If you are hiring a contractor to do insulation work on your home, be sure to check references and make sure that he or she is licensed and insured. [3]

Home insulation is easy and quick to install, gives you a great return on your investment, increases the value of your home and will serve to help you save money as soon as it is installed. Regardless of whether you need basement insulation, attic insulation or any other kind of insulation, placing insulation at the top of your home improvement list makes a world of good sense. There are, of course, many options that you can consider when it comes to home improvement, but few yield the instant and lasting benefits of home insulation.

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

(AP) ? Urging Americans to "do some soul searching," President Barack Obama injected himself into the emotional debate over the fatal shooting of a teenager in Florida, turning the racially charged case into a personal matter for the nation's first black president.

"If I had a son, he'd look like Trayvon," Obama said Friday.

Obama's words also catapulted the death in Florida of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, already the focus of major national attention, into the presidential campaign. Three Republicans seeking Obama's job all used the word "tragedy" to describe the shooting, as the president did.

"I can only imagine what these parents are going through, and when I think about this boy, I think about my own kids," Obama said at the White House.

Obama said the parents of Martin, who was shot on Feb. 26 in Sanford, Fla., a suburb of Orlando, have a right to expect "that we're going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."

Martin was shot by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who said he was acting in self-defense. Zimmerman's father is white, and his mother is Hispanic. The shooting has stoked debate over race as well as other issues. Obama did not mention Zimmerman in his comments.

Republican presidential candidates quickly weighed in after Obama spoke.

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum called the shooting a "horrible case." Referring to Florida's "stand your ground" law, which gives people wide latitude to use deadly force rather than retreat during a fight, Santorum said: "Stand your ground is not doing what this man did."

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, campaigning in Louisiana, said the shooting was a "terrible tragedy, unnecessary, uncalled for, and inexplicable at this point."

Romney said it was "entirely appropriate for the district attorney to be looking into this and to have called a grand jury and to find out what the facts are. We hope that justice is done in this case."

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia also called it a tragedy and credited local authorities for empaneling a grand jury. "There's a point in there where there ought to be some kind of signal that's pretty clear that this is a guy who'd found a hobby that's very dangerous," Gingrich said of Zimmerman.

Florida is a large and diverse state that plays an influential role in presidential elections ? it was a deciding factor in the 2000 election following a lengthy recount. The Orlando area in central Florida is particularly important, acting as a bellwether for statewide elections.

The case resonates with many black Americans, a key voting group during Obama's 2008 election, who see it as an example of bias toward blacks. Civil rights groups have held rallies in Florida and New York, saying the shooting was unjustified. Of Sanford's 53,000 residents, 57 percent are white and 30 percent are black.

Obama directed his message to Martin's parents, saying, "I think they are right to expect that all of us as Americans take this with the seriousness that it deserves, and we're going to get to the bottom of what happened."

He said that "every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this and everybody pulls together, federal state and local, to figure out exactly how this tragedy happened."

The White House had said earlier in the week that it was "not going to wade into a local law enforcement matter" though offering sympathies for Martin's family. But that changed when Obama answered a shouted question following a Rose Garden ceremony to announce the president's choice to lead the World Bank.

Obama cautioned before speaking that he must "be careful so we're not impairing any investigation." But he said he was glad the Justice Department was investigating and that Florida officials had formed the task force.

"I think all of us have to do some soul searching to figure out how did something like this happen, and that means we examine the laws and the context for what happened as well as the specifics of the incident," Obama said.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said later that the president "had thought about" the case and "was prepared to answer that question when he got it."

Martin's parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, thanked Obama for his support, saying in a statement the president's words "touched us deeply and made us wonder: If his son looked like Trayvon and wore a hoodie, would he be suspicious, too?"

NAACP President Benjamin Jealous said in an interview that Obama "spoke from the heart of a parent and the experience of a parent of color, but also from the pulpit of our national leader. And we needed to hear all of those things in this moment."

Obama, early in his term, also spoke out after the arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr., a black Harvard University professor, by a white police sergeant in Cambridge, Mass.

Gates was arrested in his home after the police sergeant arrived to investigate a possible burglary. The charges were dropped, but Obama said the police had "acted stupidly." The president said later he should have expressed his concerns with different language and invited both Gates and Sgt. James Crowley to the White House for a chat and a beer.

The Justice Department and FBI have opened a civil rights investigation into Martin's death, and a grand jury is considering whether to charge Zimmerman. Martin's parents, civil rights activists and others who have reacted to the case say they won't be satisfied until Zimmerman is arrested.

Martin was returning from a trip to a convenience store when Zimmerman started following him, telling police dispatchers Martin looked suspicious. At some point, the two got into a fight, and Zimmerman pulled out his gun.

Zimmerman told police Martin attacked him after he had given up on chasing the teenager and was returning to his sport utility vehicle.

Police Chief Bill Lee stepped down temporarily this week to try to cool the building anger that his department had not arrested Zimmerman. Hours later, Gov. Rick Scott announced that the local state attorney, Norman Wolfinger, had recused himself from the case in hopes of "toning down the rhetoric" surrounding it.

US DOJ sues AT&T for improper IP Relay billing, alleges millions in false claims to FCC

ImageAT&T has violated the United States False Claims Act to the tune of "millions of dollars," according to a Department of Justice lawsuit filed this week. The DOJ alleges that the carrier intentionally neglected to authenticate users of the IP Relay service -- a tool utilized by hearing-impaired persons to type messages that communications assistants then read to callers. The service is also abused by individuals overseas to defraud U.S. businesses (think infamous Nigerian scams), which prompted the FCC to establish a law requiring telecom providers, including AT&T, to confirm the identity of registered users, which it apparently failed to do. This resulted in thousands of fraudulent users, representing some 95 percent of all calls, which AT&T received FCC payments for to the tune of $1.30 per minute. An AT&T spokesman was somewhat dismissive when speaking to the Associated Press, saying "as the FCC is aware, it is always possible for an individual to misuse IP Relay services, just as someone can misuse the postal system or an email account, but FCC rules require that we complete all calls by customers who identify themselves as disabled." But if the allegations are proven, there could be some pretty serious repercussions for Big Blue. DOJ PR is just past the break.

Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana) Meditation | Obvious Articles

The sacral chakra is associated with extremes. When it is closed or blocked, you may experience sexual repression or addiction, sexual addiction or impotence, creative obsessions or creative blocks. Sacral chakra meditation is focused on balancing these opposites.

To do so, the mediation must go deep enough to address the repressed feelings and emotions that create sexual and creativity rigidity. Behind sexual repression one often finds a lot of emotional baggage. This baggage creates energy blocks in the sacral chakra area. The chakras are spinning energy vortexes. If you think of the sacral chakra as a spinning top without a steady energy flow, it will go slower and slower, start to wobble and finally fall over.

Svadhisthana also has influence over how we connect with others, in platonic relationships and sexually. Sexual repression is often linked to a lack of intimacy with others. Related insecurities result in a need to control everything, partly to compensate for areas in your life where you feel you have lost control.

When the sacral chakra is unbalanced, you may experience sexual repression or addiction, sexual addiction or impotence, creative obsessions or creative blocks. In all things in life, you may choose to take a more frigid and cautious approach. In the extreme, this more prudent attitude can result in your withdrawing from the enjoyment of life. Moreover, as a result of repressed energy, you may be overly aggressive and promiscuous. With a tendancy to hide feelings and avoid intimacy, you seek to control situations and relationships. These imbalances are likely to lead to some degree of emotional instability.

A good balancing meditation may use Ida and Pingala. The Sushumna channel is the major energy nadi of the chakra energy system. It runs parallel to the spine. The Ida and Pingala nadis run parallel to the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems on either side of the spine. The Ida activates the glandular system (organs) while the Pingala regulates it. By alternately plugging the left then right nostril while practicing breathing exercises, you will stimulate the Ida and Pingala and balance the functioning of the organs.
