The Four Types of Affairs, from Ask the Experts panelist John Thurman

Fourth in a series titled, ?Affair-Proof Your Relationship?

Dave Carder, my mentor, friend and author (?Close Calls? and ?Torn Asunder?) has identified four distinct types of affairs. In my own counseling practice, I have found that these descriptions help me and my clients get a better idea of how an affair developed and how it ended. Knowing a little about these styles or types may help you see where you are might be at risk for falling into an affair.

The One-Night Stand

It is normally unplanned. Many times it involves people who didn?t really know each other prior to the affair. It is usually very secretive and more often than not comes as a result of alcohol consumption. There is usually little or no emotional involvement, it is self-serving and it does not come with a desire to maintain any type of closeness. Our sexually saturated culture feeds on this type of affair. It is this type of affair that usually results in immediate and intense remorse.

The Entangled Affair

This type of affair, which I see a lot, develops gradually. The emotional involvement is intense and may last for a year or two. The sexual activity is not immediate, as with the one-night stand, but occurs later in the relationship, after a friendship is clearly established. The individuals involved in this type of relationship usually know each other before it heats up. Sometimes it can be a neighbor, co-worker, church member or a mutual friend; other times an old flame. Because of the depth of the relationship, recovery, if it occurs, will take longer.

Sexual Addiction

This type of affair often starts in childhood or early adolescents with inappropriate sexual exposure. It will eventually develop into a pattern of ritualistic acting out. It is a sex-only experience that is never satisfied. It is not about emotional attachment and is self-serving. It is another outcome of a culture that has become overly focused on sexuality. It is essentially an attempt to self-medicate shame, anxiety and depression.

When women experience this, they will tend to eat. When men feel this way, they will tend to act out sexually. This can lead to pornography, use of prostitutes and multiple affairs. Treatment usually involves some type of ?step work,? as well as individual and couple?s counseling. This is a very tough one to work on and recover from.

The Add-On Affair

This type of affair occurs to fill a specific void. It develops when a spouse shares an emotionally satisfying experience with an acquaintance because his/her spouse has no interest in participating in this activity. It starts off as platonic, like a club, a ministry team or a common leisure pursuit. They rarely meet outside of the experience they find so satisfying, and they consider each other as friends, not lovers. Although sexual activity is often infrequent and dissatisfying to one partner, it is often provided out of obligation or maintaining the friendship. In my own practice I am seeing this type of an affair as a growing trend.

Foreclosures

Although there is less liquidity with real estate, some folks prefer what they can see, touch and feel. As in most areas of life decisions are made with facts. They are confirmed with emotion. One way to have tangible property earning residual income is through foreclosures.

Foreclosure is simply what happens when you don?t pay your bills on your mortgage. The lenders want their money and they take actions to get it, often by selling the house.

My number one recommendation in this area is to THINK, RESEARCH AND BE KNOWLEDGEABLE before you act! Go to seminars. Read books. Visit web sites. Attend auctions. Talk to professionals. Join investment clubs. Become as knowledgeable as possible before you decide to act!

Most of the homework you need to do is at your local level. What are the tenant-landlord laws? What rules apply for late payment and eviction? Are there rent controls? Look up on the Internet to get a hold of local landlord and real estate specialty interest groups. Foreclosure law is formulated at the state level. Since each state has unique laws and time lines, you must read up and ask! Some states have mortgages. Some have deeds of trust.

The foreclosure process goes through 3 distinct phases:

1. Pre-foreclosure2. Foreclosure at auction3. Post-foreclosure (the property goes back on the books with the lender. The lender wants cash not property.)

In order to make money this way, you need to know about the foreclosures BEFORE they become public knowledge. FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE! BE THE FIRST TO LEARN AND ACT!

Non-payment for 2 or 3 months gets the foreclosure ball rolling. Letters start arriving from the bank. Then handed over to an attorney (4 to 6 week period), who will send further letters to the owners suggesting a cure date. Cure date is the latest date problems can be cleared up by before the foreclosure sale.

The earlier in the process you can intervene, the greater your leverage. Leverage means taking a small amount and using it to do big things. You?re saving the owner?s face and credit and getting a good deal in the process. More legwork here, but greater leverage! Keep in mind that you did not create the situation, but you can provide a win/win solution. MY PREFERENCE is to enter into the process before that cure date or after auction (REOs).

There are differing laws and procedures between states, and even between counties in the same state. In general, states differentiate according to the security instrument(s) used to establish financing and legal status. There are two categories of security instruments: 1) mortgage, and 2) deed of trust. Methods of foreclosure where mortgages are the security instruments include judicial, non-judicial, or power of sale, and entry and possession. The method of foreclosure where a deed of trust is the security instrument is almost exclusively power of sale (in Utah, trust deeds are combined with a judicial process).

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP)

Kyle Busch has three races remaining to claim a spot in the 12-driver Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Under normal circumstances, his chances would be good headed into Saturday night's race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Busch, after all, has five Cup victories at Bristol.

But that was before track owner Bruton Smith decided grinding the race track would potentially lure fans back to the track after several years of declining attendance. Asked Friday what he thought of the changes, Busch offered a succinct assessment:

''Terrible,'' he said.

He was one of the few drivers with a strong opinion after two Friday practice sessions. Qualifying was washed out by rain, and Casey Mears and Brad Keselowski will start on the front row because the field was set by practice times. Keselowski has won the last two Cup races at the track.

Few drivers ventured into the top groove during practice, and insisted it's too early to tell how the race will develop.

Smith is hoping the race proves Bristol is once again one of the most exciting tracks in NASCAR. After yet another ho-hum Bristol race in March, Smith had the top lane ground down in an effort to eliminate the two-wide racing that fans believed ruined the product. Progressive banking was added to the track in 2007, and the bumping and banging that was a Bristol trademark disappeared.

The track had a streak of 55 consecutive sellouts from 1982 until 2010, and Smith believed tightening the track might bring the fans back.

Busch was one of the drivers who didn't bother to run at the top of the track on Friday. Why didn't he check it out?

''I don't have to,'' he replied, ''I watched the Truck race.''

Timothy Peters led all 204 laps - and the first 82 were under green - in Wednesday night's truck series race. Drivers kept an eye on that race, and voiced their frustrations with Smith's track on Twitter.

''Just as expected. Killing the top groove doesn't make the bottom groove any better,'' tweeted Martin Truex Jr.

Carl Edwards, who also needs a win to move into Chase contention, said he's reserving judgment on the track until after the race. He stayed out of the top groove in practice - a combination of habit and ''I don't want to be the first guy to go up there if there's no grip'' - and said nobody knows what it will be like during the race.

''They changed the track because everybody wanted it to be two or three grooves and then they changed it back,'' Edwards said. ''I give them a lot of credit for doing the very best they can. This is one of the coolest race tracks in the world and I think they've done everything they can to make sure we have the best show that we can have and it will be an exciting race one way or another.''

Matt Kenseth wasn't even sure the track needed to be changed. He surmised the push for changes snowballed, perhaps in part to the presence of social media.

''Everybody talks about the old Bristol and people knocking each other out of the way and fighting and all that stuff. Well, we raced these cars at Bristol before they reconfigured it and there was hardly any passing,'' Kenseth said. ''Things change over time and I thought the race in the spring was pretty good. Everybody is going to want something different. We tried to narrow the track up and take grooves away to take passing away, so I'm a little confused on the whole concept to start with.

''I think all of the races are pretty good here. I haven't really seen a real bad one here. I think the racing is always entertaining.''

Mears was another driver who had no idea what to expect Saturday night.

''Where they actually worked on the track, we haven't actually been all the way up there yet,'' Mears said. ''I've seen some guys flirting with the edge of it, so it's really going to be hard to say. If it keeps guys from running up against the wall, I think it could make it a little bit more competitive just because when guys are running right up against the fence and it's really hard to pass guys down underneath.''

College Freshmen Urged to Keep Excess Pounds Away

Dietitian says even small weight gain raises students' risk for chronic disease.

SUNDAY, Aug. 19 (HealthDay News) -- Although the dreaded "Freshman 15" -- a reference to the pounds gained by new college students -- has been revealed by researchers to be a bit of an exaggeration, students should still take steps to avoid gaining unwanted pounds, an expert warns.

Kari Kooi, a registered dietitian at the Methodist Hospital in Houston, noted that most college freshman gain 3.5 pounds, but even a small weight gain should not be ignored.

"Everything from late-night eating, lack of exercise, increased alcohol consumption and an abundance of all-you-can-eat dining halls leads college students to pack on the unwanted pounds," explained Kooi in a hospital news release. She added that gaining weight in college puts students at risk for chronic disease, including diabetes and heart disease.

Kooi said that there are several cost-effective ways college students can eat healthy and avoid gaining weight, including:

• Keep healthy snacks handy. Dorm room refrigerators should be stocked with healthy, satisfying snacks, such as fruit, string cheese, Greek yogurt, hummus and baby carrots.
• Drink water. Too many calories from sugary drinks and alcoholic beverages can lead to weight gain. These drinks can also cause spikes in blood sugar that can increase hunger.
• Stay active. Exercise plays a key role in staying fit and healthy. Boost your daily activity levels by walking to class, going to the gym or participating in intramural sports.
• Eat regular meals. Skipping meals can lead to overeating and weight gain. Eating breakfast can also jumpstart your metabolism and help you concentrate in class and on tests.
• Get enough sleep. Sleeping less than six hours each night can affect hormone levels that control appetite, cravings and metabolism. People who do not get enough sleep often crave high-calorie junk food the body can quickly break down for energy.

GM's Opel, staff close to deal on shorter work week

BERLIN (Reuters) - Opel, the German unit of U.S. automaker General Motors , is close to signing an accord with workers to cut their hours at two German plants employing a total of 16,500, a spokesman for the carmaker said on Monday.

GM lost $747 million on its European operations last year as a weak economy hit car sales in the region, forcing carmakers to confront high fixed costs and excess production capacity that GM has said equates to 10 plants.

As sagging consumer demand curbs Opel deliveries in austerity-strapped southern Europe, management at the Ruesselsheim-based carmaker is making use of a clause in wage contracts to cut employees' standard 35-hour work week to 31 hours.

If management and labor agree to shorten working hours at the main factory in Ruesselsheim and a component plant in Kaiserslautern, Opel can apply for subsidies under the German government's short-work program, called "Kurzarbeit".

The talks are due to be concluded on Wednesday, and it remains unclear how many workers would be involved and exactly how their hours would be reduced.

A pact to shorten the standard workday or work week at the two western German plants could be signed within the week, allowing for implementation on September 1, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, citing unidentified people familiar with the matter.

The spokesman declined to confirm whether possible new rules on shorter working hours would take effect on September 1.

Opel's wage contracts also allow it to increase weekly hours to as high as 38.75 to work off excess orders if demand is strong.

A Spanish Springs family remains haunted by the recent, grisly backyard discovery of their beloved three pet dogs? bodies ? viciously killed by a coyote.

?It was nothing short of a crime scene,? Tiffany Crook said of finding her dogs deceased Aug. 10 in the family?s backyard. ?The hardest part for me is I was home. I heard nothing.

?This coyote left our house with a full belly, and our hearts broken,? she said. ?Our dogs were a part of our family.?

Tiffany and her husband, Stephen Crook, said they want the community to learn from their tragedy and to take precautions against coyotes.

The couple thought the urban location of their home, their fenced backyard and the security of daylight were reliable safeguards against coyotes.

They were wrong.

?I know this won?t bring our dogs home but, if we can make someone keep a close eye on their pet or small children, our dogs? deaths weren?t in vain,? Tiffany Crook said.

The deaths of the Crooks? pugs, Henry and Emma, and Ellie, a Brussels Griffon, were among 13 dog deaths reported as coyote killings in Sparks during the last three weeks, said Jack Spencer Jr., supervisory wildlife biologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture?s Wildlife Services.

More have been reported maimed in coyote attacks, he said, but reports in Reno were not known or had not been made.

?If you live in downtown Reno, you probably don?t have to be worried,? Spencer said of coyotes. ?But if you live on the fringe of wetland habitat areas, like the edge of a golf course or waterway, that?s where they?re going to be traveling.?

Wildlife experts caution that coyotes can jump over backyard fences and eat small dogs who are left unattended. There have also been reports in the Lake Tahoe area of coyotes snatching dogs who were leashed during walks with their owners, biologists said. And while coyotes are known for coming out at night, they have been striking during daylight hours.

Coyote awareness, and eliminating food sources for the hungry, opportunist predators ? such as not leaving dogs and cats alone in yards ? will help prevent attacks on family pets.

DETROIT (AP) - Down by five after one inning and facing one of the AL's hottest pitchers, the Baltimore Orioles had the Detroit Tigers right where they wanted them.

Nate McLouth hit a go-ahead, two-run triple and Baltimore stormed back to beat Detroit 7-5 on Sunday. The Orioles have rallied from five-run deficits to win three times in their last 20 games.

"That's a great win for us," manager Buck Showalter said. "This is a very workman-like team. They don't get excited when something like this happens. They just look at what they've got in front of them and start working on it."

McLouth, Nick Markakis and Mark Reynolds each had two hits for the Orioles, who have won five of seven, including the last two of the key weekend series at Detroit. Chris Davis homered for the second straight game and J.J. Hardy had a two-run double.

The Orioles lead Detroit by two games in the race for the second wild-card spot in the American League. The Tigers had won 17 of 20 at Comerica Park before dropping the last two this weekend.

"That's a very good team, and you know they feed off the emotions of that crowd," Showalter said. "Like I just told Jim (Leyland), I'm glad they are someone else's problem for the rest of the season."

The Tigers jumped all over Wei-Yin Chen (12-7), scoring five times with one out in the first. Omar Infante hit a solo homer, Miguel Cabrera walked and Prince Fielder singled to left before Jhonny Peralta drove a 2-0 pitch over the wall in center to make it 4-0.

Delmon Young singled and scored on Jeff Baker's double before Chen retired two in a row to end the inning.

"In the first inning, I was trying to attack the zone, but I couldn't get any first-pitch strikes," he said through a translator. "After that inning, I got stronger, but I still have to thank my teammates for coming through for me. That's how baseball works. You never know what can happen."

Four Baltimore relievers combined for four innings of two-hit ball, with Jim Johnson recording three outs for his 37th save in 40 chances. The right-hander is tied with Gregg Olsen for the second-most saves by an Oriole, behind Randy Myers' 45 in 1997.

"Our bullpen has been outstanding and that's the key in games like this," Showalter said. "Detroit has great bats and they are doing a lot of great things late in games, especially with those fans cheering them on. Our guys didn't let that happen."

The Orioles got back in the game in the second inning against Doug Fister (7-8). Davis connected for his 20th homer, Markakis doubled home a run and Hardy had his big hit that trimmed Detroit's lead to 5-4.

McLouth, who entered with just four RBIs for the season, put the Orioles in front with two out in the fourth, and Davis drove him in with a base hit. That knocked Fister out of the game, having allowed as many earned runs as his previous five starts combined.

The person doing the cheating is the one who is violating the relationship trust and is the one to blame. And there are really poisonous cultural narratives about ?the other woman? that blame women for men?s affairs while giving CPOS men a pass (of course women cheat too, pretty much as often as men, but the cultural conversation there is very different). However, that doesn?t mean that we need to give women who knowingly sleep with married men a pass. Are they temptresses who lure men away from marriage? No. Are the ?other women? to blame for the affair? No. Are they still doing something morally wrong that deserves a bit of condemnation? Yes. (And for the record, I have been close with people on all sides of these triangles ? so again I?ll emphasize that this isn?t to say that people who do X are terrible human beings, but rather, people do all sorts of morally wrong things and this is one of them. The ?other woman? is probably not actually a bad person. But she?s still doing a bad thing, even if it?s not as bad as the bad thing that the CPOS is doing).
