Google Q: Made in the USA - Business Insider

Google introduced the Nexus Q today at I/O 2012.

It's a dark grey orb that streams your Google Play content to your TV. It works similarly to Apple TV.

The difference is that etched into the bottom of each model is the line, "Designed and Manufactured in the U.S.A."

The New York Times reports that Google has enlisted a San Jose, Calif. factory to manufacture the Nexus Q.

The parts are almost all American-made too.

This defies the decades-old trend in tech of ditching American factories for foreign ones. Many Silicon Valley companies like Hewlett-Packard and Apple have moved their manufacturing operations to China.

'Awkward' Cast Previews 'Shocking' Season Two Premiere

'Everything is still very fresh, very prevalent,' star Beau Mirchoff tells MTV News about premiere, airing tonight (June 28) on MTV.

If you thought things couldn't get any more — dare we say it — "Awkward" for Jenna on the hit MTV comedy of the same name, you should brace yourself for what's to come in season two.

After Jenna (played by Ashley Rickards) learned who wrote the infamous letter in season one that led many of her school peers to think she tried to commit suicide, she's now dealing with the aftermath at home. Oh yeah, she's also in the middle of a bit of a love triangle between new boy, Jake, and old beau, Matty.

And given the fast pace of tonight's (June 28) season premiere, expect her family and relationship drama to move along at a very rapid speed. "Season two takes place two weeks after the finale of season one, so everything is still very fresh, very prevalent," Beau Mirchoff, who plays Matty, explained to MTV News. "The love triangle hasn't been resolved, Sadie is as villainous as ever, all of her colors have shown. Jenna Hamilton has a lot of decisions to be made. I think the fans are going to love it."

Molly Tarlov, who plays aforementioned mean girl Sadie, explained that if you thought you were going to get lulled into Jenna's life drama this season, think again. "We really start season two in the first episode just full force into it. The story moves along so quickly in the first episode," she said. "There's a lot of stuff that I will not just say surprising, I will say absolutely shocking, and is gonna, if you watch the first episode, is going to be really shocking to you."

In addition to having to keep her love life in check, Jenna is also reeling from the news that her mother was the one who wrote the letter that forever changed her life. And that news will only make things harder for her at home as her mom tries to make it up to her, albeit not always in the most productive ways.

"There's a lot of, 'Anywhere Jenna Hamilton goes, awkwardness is gonna follow,' and that is very true with the letter as well," teased Brett Davern, who stars as Jake. "I think it's gonna cause some problems at home for her and within her family. And so, not only is her drama surrounding her school life, with us, the love triangle and all her friends and stuff, but also her at-home drama, I think, increases in season two as well."

Mirchoff added, "It doesn't become known to Matty and Jake. [They] possibly find out about it later in the season, but not right away."

Study identifies causes for high rates of allergic reactions in children with food allergies

A team of researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine and four other institutions have found that young children with documented or likely allergies to milk and/or eggs, whose families were instructed on how to avoid these and other foods, still experienced allergic reactions at a rate of almost once per year. Of severe cases, less than a third received epinephrine, a medication used to counter anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic condition.

The findings are from an ongoing Consortium of Food Allergy Research (CoFAR) study that has been following more than 500 children with food allergies since infancy. The results of the three-year study appear online in the June 25 issue of Pediatrics.

Nearly 72 percent of the participants experienced a reaction, with 1,171 allergic reactions in total. Allergic reactions were attributed to such factors as a lack of close supervision, misreading ingredient labels, cross-contamination, or errors in food preparation. Participating families had been given written and verbal food avoidance instruction, and written prescriptions for self-injectable epinephrine, beforehand.

"This study reinforces the importance of educating parents and other caregivers of children with food allergy about avoiding allergenic foods and using epinephrine to treat severe food-allergic reactions," said Scott Sicherer, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of the Division of Allergy and Immunology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "We must work harder to thoroughly educate parents about the details of avoidance and when and how to correctly use epinephrine to manage this life-threatening condition."

Approximately 11 percent of the children experienced anaphylaxis, which can include symptoms such as swelling in the throat, asthma, sudden drop in blood pressure, dizziness or fainting. The children's parents or caregivers administered epinephrine in only 30 percent of the cases of children having severe reactions to food. Investigators found children did not receive epinephrine because either the drug was not available, or parents and caregivers were too afraid to administer the drug, or they did not recognize the reaction as severe and waited to see more symptoms.

"We found a significant number of young children received allergenic foods from caregivers other than their parents," said Hugh Sampson, MD, Dean for Translational Biomedical Sciences, Professor of Pediatrics, and Director of the Jaffe Food Allergy Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "This underscores the need to educate everyone who is responsible for the child, including grandparents, older siblings and teachers."

Dr. Sampson is the lead investigator for COFAR, which is also performing numerous food allergy treatment trials.

The study is taking place at The Mount Sinai Medical Center as well as research hospitals in Baltimore, MD; Denver, CO; Durham, NC; and Little Rock, Ark., with support from The National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health. NIAID conducts and supports research?at NIH, throughout the United States, and worldwide?to study the causes of infectious and immune-mediated diseases, and to develop better means of preventing, diagnosing and treating these illnesses.

Engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) have identified a catalyst that provides the same level of efficiency in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as the currently used platinum catalyst, but at 5% of the cost.

Since more than 60% of the investment in making microbial fuel cells is the cost of platinum, the discovery may lead to much more affordable energy conversion and storage devices.

The material ? nitrogen-enriched iron-carbon nanorods ? also has the potential to replace the platinum catalyst used in hydrogen-producing microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), which use organic matter to generate a possible alternative to fossil fuels.

"Fuel cells are capable of directly converting fuel into electricity," says UWM Professor Junhong Chen, who created the nanorods and is testing them with Assistant Professor Zhen (Jason) He. "With fuel cells, electrical power from renewable energy sources can be delivered where and when required, cleanly, efficiently and sustainably."

The scientists also found that the nanorod catalyst outperformed a graphene-based alternative being developed elsewhere. In fact, the pair tested the material against two other contenders to replace platinum and found the nanorods' performance consistently superior over a six-month period.

The nanorods have been proved stable and are scalable, says Chen, but more investigation is needed to determine how easily they can be mass-produced. More study is also required to determine the exact interaction responsible for the nanorods' performance.

The work was published in March in the journal Advanced Materials ("Nitrogen-Enriched Core-Shell Structured Fe/Fe3C-C Nanorods as Advanced Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction").

MFCs generate electricity while removing organic contaminants from wastewater. On the anode electrode of an MFC, colonies of bacteria feed on organic matter, releasing electrons that create a current as they break down the waste.

On the cathode side, the most important reaction in MFCs is the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Platinum speeds this slow reaction, increasing efficiency of the cell, but it is expensive.

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are related to MFCs. However, instead of electricity, MECs produce hydrogen. In addition to harnessing microorganisms at the anode, MECS also use decomposition of organic matter and platinum in a catalytic process at their cathodes.

Chen and He's nanorods incorporate the best characteristics of other reactive materials, with nitrogen attached to the surface of the carbon rod and a core of iron carbide. Nitrogen's effectiveness at improving the carbon catalyst is already well known. Iron carbide, also known for its catalytic capabilities, interacts with the carbon on the rod surface, providing "communication" with the core. Also, the material's unique structure is optimal for electron transport, which is necessary for ORR.

When the nanorods were tested for potential use in MECs, the material did a better job than the graphene-based catalyst material, but it was still not as efficient as platinum.

"But it shows that there could be more diverse applications for this material, compared to graphene," says He. "And it gave us clues for why the nanorods performed differently in MECs."

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Syria said Friday it shot down a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian air space, and Turkey vowed to "determinedly take necessary steps" in response.

It was the most clear and dramatic escalation in tensions between the two countries, which used to be allies before the Syrian revolt began in March 2011. Turkey has become one of the strongest critics of the Syrian regime's brutal response to the country's uprising.

Late Friday, Syria's state-run news agency, SANA, said the military spotted an "unidentified aerial target" that was flying at a low altitude and at a high speed.

"The Syrian anti-air defenses counteracted with anti-aircraft artillery, hitting it directly," SANA said. "The target turned out to be a Turkish military plane that entered Syrian airspace and was dealt with according to laws observed in such cases."

Turkey issued a statement Friday night following a two-hour security meeting led by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying Syrian forces downed the plane and that the two Turkish pilots remain missing.

It said Turkey "will determinedly take necessary steps" in response, without saying what those actions would be.

"Following the evaluation of data provided by our related institutions and the findings of the joint search and rescue efforts with Syria, it is understood that our plane was downed by Syria," the statement said, without providing other details.

Relations between Turkey and Syria were already tense before the downing of the F4 plane on Friday.

Turkey has joined nations such as the U.S. in saying that Syrian President Bashar Assad should step down because of the regime's brutal suppression of the uprising in his country. Turkey also has set up refugee camps on its border for more than 32,000 Syrians who have fled the fighting.

Syria and Turkey have expelled each other's ambassadors and Syria has accused Turkey of supporting Syrian opposition and even allowing Syrian rebels to operate out of Turkish soil. Turkey strongly denies the allegations.

After a cross-border shooting by Syrian forces in April, Turkey said it would not tolerate any action that it deemed violating its security. The firing had left two refugees dead at a camp near the town of Kilis just inside Turkey.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Selcuk Unal earlier on Friday rejected allegations that Turkey was sending arms and other equipment to Syrian rebels as baseless. Unal said Turkey was not sending weapons to any of its neighbors, including Syria.

Turkey's military provided no details on the downed plane's mission Friday, but some Turkish TV reports said it was on a reconnaissance flight.

Syria claimed the jet violated its air space over territorial waters, penetrating about 1 kilometer (0.62 mile), but that Syrian vessels joined the search for it, according to Turkey's NTV television. It said Syria forces realized that it was a Turkish jet after firing at it.

Ilter Turan, a professor of political science at Istanbul's Bilgi University, told NTV that Syria's action was clearly "hostile," even if it violated its air space.

"They could have either sent their planes to confront it or force it to land, it is a hostile act by any standard," Turan said.

Turan, however, predicted that Syria will try to avoid escalating tensions further.

Erdogan said the plane went down in the Mediterranean Sea about 8 miles (13 kilometers) away from the Syrian town of Latakia. Four Turkish gunboats and three helicopters were searching for the pilots and wreckage of the plane.

The Turkish military said the plane disappeared from its radar and that radio contact was lost at 11:58 a.m. (0958GMT) Friday during a mission flight.

Some eyewitnesses in Turkey's seaside area of Hatay province told private NTV television that the plane was flying so low they thought it would "hit the roofs." They said the plane then flew toward the sea.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton earlier this month had warned about a massing of Syrian forces near Aleppo, saying such a deployment could be a "red line" for Syria's northern neighbor Turkey "in terms of their strategic and national interests."

Japanese scientists have used induced stem cells to create a liver-like tissue in a dish.

Although they have yet to publish their results and much work remains to be done, the achievement could have big clinical implications. If the results bear out, they would also constitute a significant advance in the ability to coax stem cells to self-organize into organs.

The work was presented by Takanori Takebe, a stem-cell biologist at Yokohama City University in Japan, at the annual meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research in Yokohama last week. ?It blew my mind,? said George Daley, director of the stem-cell transplantation programme at the Boston Children?s Hospital in Massachusetts, who chaired the session.

?It sounds like a genuine advance,? says Stuart Forbes, who studies liver regeneration at the University of Edinburgh, UK. Forbes, who also works as a consultant for Scotland?s liver-transplantation unit, says that the advance could one day help to avoid the ?bleak outcome? currently experienced by the many patients who don?t survive long enough to get a new liver.

But the liver described by Takebe has a long way to go before that. Takebe told how his team grew the organ using induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS), created by reprogramming human skin cells to an embryo-like state. The researchers placed the cells on growth plates in a specially designed medium; after nine days, analysis showed that they contained a biochemical marker of maturing liver cells, called hepatocytes.

At that key point, Takebe added two more types of cell known to help to recreate organ-like function in animals: endothelial cells, which line blood vessels, taken from an umbilical cord; and mesenchymal cells, which can differentiate into bone, cartilage or fat, taken from bone marrow. Two days later, the cells assembled into a 5-millimetre-long, three-dimensional tissue that the researchers labelled a liver bud ? an early stage of liver development.

The tissue lacks bile ducts, and the hepatocytes do not form neat plates as they do in a real liver. In that sense, while it does to some degree recapitulate embryonic growth, it does not match the process as faithfully as the optic cup recently reported by another Japanese researcher. But the tissue does have blood vessels that proved functional when it was transplanted under the skin of a mouse. Genetic tests show that the tissue expresses many of the genes expressed in real liver. And, when transferred to the mouse, the tissue was able to metabolize some drugs that human livers metabolize but mouse livers normally cannot. The team claims that its work is ?the first report demonstrating the creation of a human functional organ with vascular networks from pluripotent stem cells?.

Takebe says the success depended on properly timing the addition of the other two cell types. ?It took over a year and hundreds of trials,? says Takebe.

The team says that the tissue's three dimensions will give it advantages over simple cell-replacement therapies. It could be used for long-term replacement or short-term graft while the recipient waits for a suitable liver donor, or in cases in which doctors anticipate that the native liver will eventually regain its function. But such applications would require extensive development, including making sure that the tissue contains the proper arrangement of lobules.

It won?t be easy, says Forbes. To treat chronic liver disease, the cells would have to be stable for at least five years, the average survival period for those with the disease. But it is not clear whether that would be possible, especially considering that they would be exposed to many toxins and pathogens. Furthermore, the organ would need to stay the right size, without atrophying or developing cancerous growth. ?Any deviation from the mature phenotype could be catastrophic for the graft,? says Forbes.

"What interests us is not that we can do a composer's job," he said. "What interests us is that we can quantify the consumer or listener's creative role."

Music research is not MacCallum's day job. He actually is an expert on the genetics of mosquitoes. He also loves music. His paper is full of biological references, describing how music is changed by the same mechanisms that organisms and languages use to evolve.

MacCallum wrote a program called DarwinTunes and posted it on the web.

DarwinTunes began with a series of sound loops, eight seconds long, consisting of sounds produced by computer from sine waves ? not very natural-sounding. Any melodies are purely coincidental.

The researchers did set limits. MacCallum said. They designed the loops to have four beats to the bar, to continue for four bars, and used the conventional Western 12-tone scale so it would not sound alien to their Western subjects.

The sounds are entirely artificial, MacCallum said, because if he used real instruments the personal preferences of the listeners might alter their decision. There are people, for instance, who hate accordions.

Participants in the study vote on a scale of one to five on whether they like the loops or not. Every time 20 loops have been rated, the top 10 are paired with each other randomly, and the bottom 10 are dropped from the program.

"If it's good music, it survives, makes babies, and if it's bad music according to the audience, then they just die off," MacCallum said.

MacCallum said this is mirrored in nature. There are some species of reptiles, for instance, which essentially haven't evolved in 100 million years, probably because they didn't need to for survival. Their environment stabilized. Also, there were a lot more of the reptiles than tones in his program ? and with large populations, you need only a small fitness advantage.

MacCallum said he and his colleagues were changing the program to take it off its plateau and resume evolution. The process also happens in life. A thousand teenage bands practice in garages, he said, and sometimes a few are so good they are encouraged to play publicly. The really good ones become popular around the country and the world. Their success breeds imitators.

Is what the program produced real music?

Seems like a stretch, says Sharon Levy, who teaches music literature at the Juilliard School in New York and the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University.

"Certainly, as the authors note, this kind of program can only evolve so far. That's partly due to the limited choice within the program itself, as it's about very short segments of musical material, whereas some of what's considered the most important musical contributions, at least in the West, has to do with how such materials are arranged, manipulated and transformed across a much larger unit of musical time," Levy said.

"Another issue," Levy said, "is that everyone ? brilliant musician or not ? plays an equally limited role. If the authors wanted to continue the evolutionary model, then perhaps folks like Bach or Beethoven might be seen as kinds of musical meteors who dramatically altered the evolutionary process, which, if nothing else, is a nice metaphor."

MacCallum thinks it's music within a limited definition.

"It's a fact we've made music that is more pleasing to Western people," said MacCallum. "But more pleasing is not the same as a Mahler symphony."

Mobile and photo sharing are two segments which Facebook is really focused on, and Face.com?s mobile facial recognition could help it drive engagement on its platform by increasing the ratio of tagged photos on its network. By providing accurate tagging recommendations whenever users click a photo, Facebook could see a significant increase in photo tagging on mobile, which would directly boost engagement levels on the website as users tag more photos and like or comment on the photos they or their friends are tagged in.

Higher user engagement ultimately translates into higher advertising revenues, which account for most of Facebook?s value. The more time users spend on Facebook?s web platform and apps, the better the chance Facebook has of monetizing them.

Fighting flares along Israel-Gaza border

GAZA (Reuters) - Israel launched air strikes, killing two Palestinians, and Hamas fired its first cross-border rocket barrages in more than a year as fighting along the Israel-Gaza frontier flared on Tuesday for a second day.

The confrontation initially appeared to fit a familiar pattern of Israeli strikes against small squads of Gaza militants and rockets launched toward sparsely populated areas in southern Israel near the border.

But the surprise decision by the Gaza Strip's Hamas Islamist rulers to re-engage militarily with Israel after months of staying on the sidelines and discouraging smaller militant groups from firing rockets held the prospect of wider conflict.

Since Monday, Israeli air strikes have killed six Palestinians, at least four of them militants. Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman, said the attacks prompted the group's military wing "to take a firm stance" and launch rockets.

Israeli security officials said at least 14 rockets were fired at southern Israel on Tuesday, causing no casualties.

Although other militant groups have fired rockets across the border in previous surges of violence, Hamas had held its fire under unofficial truces with Israel, a policy widely seen in Israel as effectively enabling the group to train and arm without much risk of Israeli attack.

Israel has said that Hamas, which seized the Gaza Strip from forces loyal to Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007, bears overall responsibility for any attacks from the coastal enclave.

GROUND OPERATION

"The more things deteriorate, the closer we come to a decision we don't want to make," Israeli cabinet minister Silvan Shalom said. "The prospect of a ground operation (in the Gaza Strip) shouldn't frighten us."

"If this situation escalates, and I hope it won't, then all options are open. They know it. We know it. The international community knows it," he told Israel Radio.

On Monday, before the Gaza flare-up, militants who crossed into Israel from Egypt's Sinai desert fired on Israelis building a barrier on that frontier, killing one worker, before soldiers shot and killed two of the attackers.

The Sinai attack, launched soon after the Muslim Brotherhood declared victory in Egypt's presidential election, increased Israeli concerns about lawlessness in the area since the fall of President Hosni Mubarak last year.

In a video recording obtained by Reuters in Gaza, a group of masked men claimed responsibility for the Sinai incident on behalf of what they said was a newly formed Islamic movement, "The Shura Council of Mujahideen in the Holy Land".

The masked men used Islamic slogans, pledging to liberate the Holy Land from what they termed Jewish control.

A second video showed two men, one of whom said they were about to embark on a mission to attack "the Zionist forces on the border of Egypt and occupied Palestine", an apparent reference to Monday's incident on the Sinai border.

The first man said he was an Egyptian named Abu Salah al-Masri. The other said he came from Saudi Arabia and gave his name as Abu Huthiyfa al-Rathali. The videos could not immediately be verified.
