What It Costs To Die? How much dying really cost? - Know it here ...

How much dying really cost

If you?re still on the fence about whether funeral cover is worth it, consider how much they actually cost. Even if you have a life insurance policy, that won?t pay out until after your life insurance company has checked every premium payment and investigated the cause of death thoroughly, which takes longer than your family can wait for the funeral. Here?s what to expect when it comes to funeral planning.

Funeral home fees
It doesn?t matter how you want to be buried (whether its turned into a diamond or mined for precious metals), a funeral home fee is unavoidable. Even if you want to be cremated there are costs associated with the funeral home. These costs include the cost of permits, obituaries, death certificates and holding the remains until interment; all of which are priced individually. This can cost well into the thousands.

Interment costs
Interment isn?t a simple process. It includes the services of a mortician, transporting the remains, embalming the body, the casket or cremation process. Such costs are also unavoidable, but they can be reduced. Going directly through the crematorium instead of through a funeral home can save you thousands. But there?s no ceremony there. If you decide not to be cremated, then there are additional costs such as a tombstone, plot and casket to consider.

Services
It goes without saying that a dignified burial is much more expensive. Displaying the decedent?s favourite flowers with a string quartet at the services is expensive. It?s also outside the funeral home?s service offerings which does give you some room to shop around, but most families don?t have the patience or mood to do this. These services include catering, flowers, venue costs, as well as the price of the priest all of which must be paid before the funeral.

Even a modest service can cost thousands which is more than a family, even one with life insurance, can afford or will want to consider at the time of death. It only makes sense then to have funeral cover.

German group slams Catholic 'pay to pray' decree

BERLIN (AP) ? A Catholic reform group in Germany criticized the country's bishops Monday for declaring that believers who refuse to pay religious taxes won't be able to receive the sacrament, become godparents or work in church institutions.

A century-old agreement with the state adds up to nine percent to the income tax bill of Germany's 25 million registered Roman Catholics, earning the church more than ?4 billion ($5.2 billion) annually. The same tax applies to Protestants and Jews.

The churches use the income to pay employees' salaries and fund social work such as care for the elderly. The churches themselves aren't taxed by the state but instead pay an administrative fee for the collection of religious tax. Donations represent a far smaller share of the churches' income than in the United States.

The Catholic bishops' decree in Germany last week is part of an attempt to stem the steady flow of people who opt out of paying religious taxes. It declares that they have committed a "grave lapse" and effectively left the church.

But the group We are Church ? which claims to represent tens of thousands of grassroots Catholics ? said the bishops' decision to freeze believers out if they don't pay up was "the wrong signal at the wrong time."

"Instead of seeking to understand the reasons for the high number of people leaving the church, this decree by the bishops represents a threat to the church's members," it said.

The group said many German Catholics choose not to pay religious taxes because they disagree with the church's actions, not because they have lost their faith. It said the decision undermined the bishops' own efforts to regain credibility among believers who have become disenchanted by the fact that for decades the Catholic Church covered up child abuse by priests.

Almost 3 million German Catholics have opted out of paying church taxes in the past two decades. In 2010, at the height of abuse revelations in Germany, some 180,000 took the step ? the highest yearly number ever recorded.

On Wednesday, Germany's top administrative court is scheduled to hear the case of retired German theology Professor Hartmut Zapp, who wants to leave the church as an institution but remain a member of the Catholic community.

"The decree clarifies that one cannot partially leave the church," the bishops said last week.

When a German Catholic decides to stop paying religious tax their parish priest will in future send a letter outlining the costs of such a decision. These include being denied a church burial "unless you have shown remorse in some way before your death," according to a template of the letter posted on the website of the German Bishops' Conference.

"Maybe you haven't considered the consequences of your decision and would like to reverse this step," the letter adds, inviting the believer to seek out their priests for a clarifying chat.

New IVF breakthrough

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg have discovered that a chemical can trigger the maturation of small eggs to healthy, mature eggs, a process that could give more women the chance of successful IVF treatment in the future. The results have been published in the revered journal PloS ONE.

Women and girls treated for cancer with radiotherapy and chemotherapy are often unable to have children as their eggs die as a result of the treatment.

Although it is now possible to freeze eggs and even embryos, this is not an option for girls who have yet to reach puberty. A better way of preserving their fertility is to freeze slices of ovarian tissue that contain small immature eggs, and subsequently mature these eggs so that they can be used in IVF treatment. Unfortunately there is, at present, no way of maturing small eggs in an artificial environment outside the body.

A research group led by professor Kui Liu at the University of Gothenburg has recently discovered that a chemical which inhibits the PTEN molecule can trigger the maturation of small eggs to form healthy, mature eggs.

Carrying out a study on mice, the researchers managed to produce five live young mice from eggs matured using this PTEN inhibitor to help the growth and maturation process.

The results have been published in PloS ONE and build on previous results published in Science, where the group showed that PTEN is a molecule that inhibits an egg's development.

"This discovery demonstrates that there is a realistic chance of being able to use PTEN inhibitors to activate small eggs in a test tube," says Kui Liu, professor at the University of Gothenburg's Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology.

Professor Kui Liu has led the study and is optimistic about the new method. "This technique is extremely valuable for those women who have only small eggs in their ovaries and cannot be helped by IVF as things stand," says Kui Liu.

Kui Liu's group demonstrated in the study that a short treatment with the PTEN inhibitor can trigger the growth of small eggs, and that this treatment makes it possible to produce plenty of mature eggs.

The results also show that healthy, live young can be born from treated eggs used in IVF. Not only were the young mice born fertile, they also showed no signs or symptoms of chronic disease at the age of 15 months, which equates to 70 human years.

Kui Liu is a professor of molecular biology and his group specialises in the study of molecular mechanisms that affect the development of female reproductive cells. His aim is to be able to use this method to help women.

"We hope to see this method being used clinically within five to ten years," says Kui Liu.

Protests erupt in Afghanistan as Muslim anger over film simmers

KABUL (Reuters) - Thousands of protesters took to the streets of the Afghan capital on Monday, setting fire to cars and shouting "death to America", the latest in demonstrations that have swept the Muslim world against a film mocking the Prophet Mohammad.

Western embassies across the Muslim world are on high alert and the United States has urged vigilance after days of anti-American violence provoked by the film.

"There were between 3,000 and 4,000 demonstrators. They burned some police cars, but we could split them up and prevent the insecurity widening," Lieutenant-General Fahem Qayem, police quick reaction force commander, told Reuters in Kabul.

Embassies in Kabul's heavily guarded central zone were placed on lockdown, including the U.S. and British missions, after violence flared near fortified housing compounds for foreign workers in the city's volatile eastern suburbs.

"We will defend our prophet until we have blood across our bodies. We will not let anyone insult him," said protester Jan Agha Pashtun, giving what was apparently a false name to avoid police retaliation. "Americans will pay for their dishonor."

It was the latest in a week of violent protests fanned by anger over a video, posted on the Internet under several titles including "Innocence of Muslims", that mocked the Prophet Mohammad and portrayed him as a womanizer and a fool.

The head of Libya's national assembly said an attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans last Tuesday looked like a planned assault by a "group with an agenda" rather than a spontaneous reaction to the video posted online.

With protests against the film continuing from London to Lahore on Sunday, Western diplomatic missions were on edge. Germany followed the U.S. lead and withdrew some staff from its embassy in Sudan, which was stormed on Friday.

The United States ordered non-essential staff and family members to leave its embassy on Saturday after the Khartoum government turned down a U.S. request to send Marines to bolster security.

Non-essential U.S. personnel have also been withdrawn from Tunisia, and Washington urged U.S. citizens to leave the capital Tunis after the embassy there was targeted on Friday.

About 350 people chanted slogans at a rally outside the U.S. embassy in London on Sunday. A small group of protesters burned a U.S. flag outside the embassy in the Turkish capital, and in Pakistan there were protests in more than a dozen cities.

The head of Shi'ite militant group Hezbollah called for protests in Beirut this week.

"Those responsible for the film, starting with the U.S., must be held accountable," Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said. "All these developments are being orchestrated by U.S. intelligence."

"AGENDA FOR REVENGE"

The violence is the most serious wave of anti-American protests in the Muslim world since the start of the Arab Spring revolts last year. At least nine people were killed in protests in several countries on Friday.

The crisis presents U.S. President Barack Obama with a foreign policy headache as November elections approach.

Some U.S. officials have suggested the Benghazi attack was planned by Islamist militants using the video as a pretext, a hypothesis endorsed by Mohammed Magarief, the president of Libya's national assembly.

"Call it whatever you want, al Qaeda or not, what happened was an act by a group with an agenda for revenge. They chose a specific time, technique and certain victims. This is what it was all about," Magarief told Reuters in an interview.

However, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice, said on Sunday talk shows that preliminary information indicated that the attack was not pre-meditated.

"There's no question, as we've seen in the past with things like 'The Satanic Verses', with the cartoon of the Prophet Mohammad, there have been such things that have sparked outrage and anger and this has been the proximate cause of what we've seen," she said.

U.S. FORCES DEPLOYED

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said at the weekend he hoped the worst of the violence was over but U.S. missions must remain on guard.

"It would appear that there is some leveling off on the violence that we thought might take place," he told reporters on his plane en route to Asia on Saturday.

"Having said that, these demonstrations are likely to continue over the next few days, if not longer."

The United States has deployed a significant force in the Middle East to deal with any contingencies and rapid deployment teams were ready to respond to incidents, he said.

The foreign minister of Egypt, where hundreds of people were arrested in four days of clashes, assured Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that U.S. diplomatic grounds would be protected.

Mohamed Kamel Amr told Clinton in a telephone call that the film was designed to incite racial hatred and was therefore "contradictory with laws aimed at developing relationships of peace and mutual understanding between nations and states".

Terms of Service

There are a few ground rules for participation in LAGbook. Please respect these rules, and each other.

Be civil.

No personal attacks. Do not feel compelled to defend your honor in public.

Stay on topic in Forums.

Please pay attention to the topic of your messages, and check that it still relates to its parent. Off-topic discussion not taken to private email is eligible for removal.

Be kind to newcomers.

Newcomers may be annoying. But lots of valued contributors started out this way, and treating newcomers kindly makes them more likely to turn into the valuable community members we all know and love.
So while you don't have to humor them or suffer them gladly, and it's fine to point out when they make mistakes, point newcomers in the right direction in addition to turning them away from the wrong ones, and be kind to them in the process of correcting their transgressions.

Let sleeping dogs lie.

It's tempting to revisit controversial decisions you do not agree with, but it's rarely productive to do so, since it almost always results in the same heated, lengthy, and time/energy draining discussions leading to the same conclusion that was reached in the last round.
Therefore, for issues already raised, discussed, and decided upon, reopen the discussion only if you have significant new information that would reasonably prompt reconsideration of the original decision.

Ignore spammers.

Spam is a blight upon the face of the net. Nobody likes it. However, it is hard to avoid. Despite our best efforts, you will occasionally see spam on our site. However, don't forget that complaining about spam in public increases noise, but not signal. It may make you feel better, but it doesn't help.

Identify your subject matter.

Not everyone has time reading all forum and wiki postings. To ensure that your message reach the right people at timely manner, identify your subject matter clearly in the subject line. Subjects like a question and problem are not very helpful.

No unsubscribe messages.

Unfortunately, this bears repeating.

No test messages.

Please do not send test messages to the forum. You can, however, create test pages on the Wiki, but please don't forget to delete them after you finish learning.

Venezuela opposition chides Chavez over recent weeping jag

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's opposition presidential candidate chided Hugo Chavez on Sunday for publicly weeping over the loss of freedom he has had to contend with during his 14 years in power, all part of an increasingly dramatic campaign ahead of the October 7 vote.

Facing his toughest-ever re-election challenge, socialist "revolutionary" Chavez teared up during a televised speech on Saturday, lamenting the loss of his freedom to roam anonymously through Venezuela's towns and countryside.

Henrique Capriles, the business-friendly candidate seeking to unseat Chavez, told a rally that the incumbent should not be crying for himself but for the Venezuelans who have suffered rising crime and economic mismanagement under his rule.

"Yesterday the government's candidate cried because he wants to be free. He cried for himself," Capriles told thousands of supporters at a campaign event in the Petare neighborhood of Caracas, one of the biggest slums in South America.

"Who cries for the mothers mourning over their children killed by violence? Who cries when there's not enough food to feed their families?" Capriles said. "There is nothing worse than messianic politics."

Wall Street expects Venezuelan bond prices to jump if Capriles wins. Also in play on October 7 is control of the world's biggest crude reserves and the future of state oil company PDVSA, a top supplier of energy to the United States.

Most of the best-known pollsters put Chavez ahead by 10 points or more. But opinion polls are notoriously controversial and divergent in Venezuela.

Capriles' numbers have crept up in recent weeks. One major pollster on Friday put him just ahead of Chavez, 48.1 percent to 46.2 percent - neck-and-neck given the margin of error.

Capriles' street rally on Sunday was his first since rival supporters threw stones ahead of a campaign event on September 12, at which a pickup truck carrying opposition campaign materials was set on fire.

Some glass bottles were thrown at Capriles supporters during Sunday's rally but his security detail quickly restored order.

Chavez, who has battled cancer over the past year, is known for long speeches during which he often bursts into song and digresses into the folksy anecdotes that have endeared him to many of the country's poor.

But Saturday's lament for his lost liberty caught his audience of supporters by surprise during an event in the southwestern cattle-ranching town of San Fernando.

"If it were up to me, you know I'd get down off this stage, and I'd go walking, as in times past," he said, his voice quivering and tears rolling down his cheek.

"My last dream is to free myself ... free myself of all of this, but only after we have made the country that we dream of a reality," Chavez said at the emotional high point of Saturday's address.

The PPC Campaign Can Help You Win Clients | Internet Millionaire ...

?

By David Wong

The switch from printed materials to campaigns utilising the World Wide Web has been the greatest development in the realm of advertising. This is where modern technology merges with the age-old concept of advertisements. Search engine optimisation, social media networking, and viral marketing are samples of techniques used on the internet to be able to offer businesses the exposure they need. One favoured technique advertisers use today in winning clients and boosting sales is the Pay Per Click or PPC Campaign.

Online traffic can be generated through Pay Per Click. Search engines are the main sites many people visit every day, which is why PPC is used together with these. To be able to lead visitors to their business page, advertisers start by bidding on keywords that are connected with their enterprises. Let us take into account a company that sells toilet seats as an illustration. They shall now bid on possible key phrases that are relevant to their services and target audience. In such a case, they may bid on the words ?toilet?, ?toilet seats?, ?lavatory?, or ?inexpensive toilets?. A link to the company selling toilets will then show up on the search results page after someone makes searches that contain any of these words. Banners, pop-out ads, and widgets are common kinds of these links. The person is transported to your site as soon as he clicks any of these. The location and visibility you seek determines the sum you bid. The most expensive and sought-after spot is the first result page, because survey reveals that over fifty percent of all individuals no longer proceed to the subsequent pages. Advertisers pay publishers based on how often the ad is clicked in addition to spending money on bidding. The nice thing about this is that you only pay for the actual visits to your site. Furthermore, this can show you how effective your promotional campaign is because it allows you to clearly keep track of the number of site visitors.

Two primary factors to consider in this kind of modern marketing strategy are creativity and competence. Just like all other kinds of advertising, the aim of Pay Per Click is to get the interest of clients. The ads should be unique, attractive, and intriguing enough to lure people into clicking on them. You could pick from lots of PPC experts online. It is necessary to invest on a competent company that is equipped with the latest tools and an experienced staff. Before you choose, go over their past works and check out the success rates of their campaigns with other clients.

Olympus E-PL5 and E-PM2: Micro Four Thirds cameras with OM-D-like focusing, performance boosts (hands-on)

Olympus EPL5 and EPM2 Micro Four Thirds cameras with OMDlike focusing, performance boosts handson

We've been very impressed with Olympus' first OM-D camera, the EM-5. That model's 5-axis image stabilization and super-fast autofocus won us over, while the retro design appeased nostalgics as well. Now, it's time for that speedy shooting to make its way to the company's other Micro Four Thirds models -- the E-PL5 and E-PM2. Both models, announced today, offer nearly identical specifications, with notable differences on the form-factor front. The E-PL5 is the premium model of this bunch, coming in at $700 with a 12-42mm f/3.5-5.6 lens or $650 for the body only, while the E-PM2 will run you 100 bucks less for both configurations. Both cameras include 16.1-megapixel Live MOS sensors, top ISO of 25,600, 3-inch 460k-dot touch-enabled LCDs, 1080i video and an 8fps continuous shooting mode. The EM-5's five-axis stabilization is absent here, though a three-axis version should suffice in low light. Each model also includes an external flash and a rebate offer for a free Toshiba FlashAir 802.11b/g/n card, which enables connectivity with the OI Share apps for Android and iOS.

We had a chance to check both cameras out just before Photokina, and were quite pleased with the design, along with that OM-D-like focusing performance, which really is as speedy as Olympus claims. The camera focused instantaneously with almost all of the lenses we tried, though it was a bit sluggish, understandably, when paired with the 60mm f/2.8 macro. The displays were equally sharp, though the PL5 packs a nifty articulating version, which can tilt up, down or face forward for self-portraits. We also enjoyed shooting with the super-slim 15mm f/8 body cap lens, which features a tiny front element with a slide-over cover -- while it's limited on the aperture front and includes fixed focus, it's arguably more useful than a traditional cap (Olympus hasn't confirmed pricing for that optic, though it'll likely come in below the $100 mark). That aforementioned dust-and-splash-proof macro will retail for $500 in early October, while a new 12mm f/2 lens will ship during the same time for $1,100. The "Mini" E-PM2 will be available in silver, black, white and red, while the E-PL5 will ship in silver, black and white -- both versions will be available in October. You can take a closer look at each of the offerings in the gallery below, then jump past the break for the full rundown from Olympus.

Scientists discover how the brain ages

ScienceDaily (Sep. 12, 2012) ? Researchers at Newcastle University have revealed the mechanism by which neurons, the nerve cells in the brain and other parts of the body, age.

The research, published September 12 in Aging Cell, opens up new avenues of understanding for conditions where the aging of neurons are known to be responsible, such as dementia and Parkinson's disease.

The aging process has its roots deep within the cells and molecules that make up our bodies. Experts have previously identified the molecular pathway that react to cell damage and stems the cell's ability to divide, known as cell senescence.

However, in cells that do not have this ability to divide, such as neurons in the brain and elsewhere, little was understood of the aging process. Now a team of scientists at Newcastle University, led by Professor Thomas von Zglinicki have shown that these cells follow the same pathway.

This challenges previous assumptions on cell senescence and opens new areas to explore in terms of treatments for conditions such as dementia, motor neuron disease or age-related hearing loss.

Newcastle University's Professor Thomas von Zglinicki who led the research said: "We want to continue our work looking at the pathways in human brains as this study provides us with a new concept as to how damage can spread from the first affected area to the whole brain."

Working with the University's special colony of aged mice, the scientists have discovered that aging in neurons follows exactly the same rules as in senescing fibroblasts, the cells which divide in the skin to repair wounds.

DNA damage responses essentially re-program senescent fibroblasts to produce and secrete a host of dangerous substances including oxygen free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS) and pro-inflammatory signalling molecules. This makes senescent cells the 'rotten apple in a basket' that can damage and spoil the intact cells in their neighbourhood. However, so far it was always thought that aging in cells that can't divide -- post-mitotic, non-proliferating cells -- like neurons would follow a completely different pathway.

Now, this research explains that in fact aging in neurons follows exactly the same rules as in senescing fibroblasts.

Professor von Zglinicki, professor of Cellular Gerontology at Newcastle University said: "We will now need to find out whether the same mechanisms we detected in mouse brains are also associated with brain aging and cognitive loss in humans. We might have opened up a short-cut towards understanding brain aging, should that be the case."

Dr Diana Jurk, who did most of this work during her PhD in the von Zglinicki group, said: "It was absolutely fascinating to see how aging processes that we always thought of as completely separate turned out to be identical. Suddenly so much disparate knowledge came together and made sense."

The research contributes to the Newcastle Initiative on Changing Age, the University's response to the societal challenge of aging, seeking new ways to make the most of the extensive opportunities associated with increasing human longevity.

The team want to further study the mechanism using the unique resource of the Newcastle Brain Bank.

Reds to host Angels in 1st interleague opener

NEW YORK (AP) ? One of baseball's traditional home openers will have an innovative twist next season.

The Cincinnati Reds will host the Los Angeles Angels on April 1, becoming the first teams to start their seasons with an interleague matchup.

"It's a little strange, but Anaheim has a lot of big-name guys," Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo said. "It'll be Albert Pujols coming back for the first time. It's a nice mix for us. It's strange, but I'd rather do that than open with Milwaukee or someone in our division we see all the time."

The Reds, the first professional team, celebrate opening day with a parade and have opened all but four seasons at home: 1885, 1888, 1966 and 1990, according to STATS LLC.

"The tradition is still here. We're still opening here," Cincinnati outfielder Jay Bruce said. "We've still got that going for us."

Major League Baseball's 2013 preliminary schedule, announced Wednesday, includes several format changes caused by the shift of the Houston Astros to the American League. A National League franchise for its first 51 seasons, the Astros start AL play on April 2 when they host cross-state rival Texas.

Houston moves from the NL Central to the AL West, creating six divisions of five teams each. Under a move announced last November, the Astros will become only the second team since 1900 to switch leagues, following Milwaukee's entry to the NL for the 1998 season.

Because there will be 15 teams in each major league for the first time, interleague play is necessary nearly every day. Since its inception in 1997, interleague play had been concentrated mostly during periods in late May and June.

Eleven of the 15 series on the final weekend of the regular season, Sept. 27-29, will involve division rivalries. The exceptions have the Yankees at Houston, Milwaukee at the Mets, Detroit at Miami and Washington at Arizona.

MLB is abandoning its two-year experiment with midweek openers, reverting to a Sunday night start in a nationally televised game on ESPN that will be determined later.

In another shift, the New York Yankees and Mets for now are slated to open at home on the same day for the first time, with Boston visiting the Bronx on April 1 and San Diego playing in Queens. ESPN could move Red Sox-Yankees to the March 31 Sunday night slot.

"I think it's kind of cool," Mets third baseman David Wright said.

In areas with two teams, MLB generally tries to schedule only one club home at any time.

"Great for baseball to have all of New York watching their favorite teams play at home that day," Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said.

Other AL openers on April 1 have Kansas City at Chicago, Detroit at Minnesota and Seattle at Oakland. NL games that day are St. Louis at Arizona, Philadelphia at Atlanta, San Francisco at Los Angeles, Colorado at Milwaukee, Chicago at Pittsburgh and Miami at Washington.

Tuesday openers include Baltimore at Tampa Bay and Cleveland at Toronto.

Under the new schedule format, a team plays 19 games against each division rival for a total of 76, and six or seven against each league opponent in the other two divisions for a total of 66. Each club will play 20 interleague games over eight series, with rivalry games ? such as Cubs-White Sox and Dodgers-Angels ? in consecutive two-game series during the week of May 27. That's down from a pair of three-game rivalry series.

"We played the Yankees more than anybody. That could be difficult," Mets manager Terry Collin said. "I think it's starting to even out."

In the old format, teams in the AL East, AL Central, NL East and NL West played division rivals 18 times each, while AL West played in-division opponents 19 times apiece and NL Central teams met 15-18 times. AL interdivision opponents met six to 10 times and NL interdivision opponents six to nine times. While AL teams played 18 interleague games, the total varied from 12-18 in the NL.

In addition to traditional rivals, interleague play next year has the AL East playing the NL West, the NL East facing the AL Central and the AL West meeting the NL Central.
