NEW YORK (AP) ? Could Charlie Sheen be a judge on "American Idol"? The actor says he's game.

In an interview Tuesday on Ryan Seacrest's radio show, Sheen said "Idol" producer Nigel Lythgoe publicly threw his name out there as a possible judge and the idea piqued people's interest ? including his own.

"It seems so out of the blue that it almost made perfect sense. I thought this could be a lot of fun," he said. "Seriously ... I'm genuinely interested. It's so different, it could be radical."

Sheen also told Jay Leno Monday night on "The Tonight Show" that his two demands would be that FX and his "Anger Management" team "would have to be into it" and there would need to be a charitable component to him taking the job.

He may not have music experience, but neither did Ellen DeGeneres before she was named a judge for season 9. She left the show after just one season.

Last week, both Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler announced they would not be returning for the show's 12th season.

Other names that have been kicked around as possible replacements include Mariah Carey and former "Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert.

Trouble breathing, headaches, vomiting, rapid heartbeat, nausea, dizziness, confusion, and flushed skin are symptoms of heat stroke. The victim's skin may feel hot, yet dry to the touch due to dehydration. This is a medical emergency, as damage to internal organs may result.

Keep fluids handy, and find a shady place for you and your children to take a break from the sun. Your children are much more susceptible to heat injuries than you are. If they are playing hard in the heat, ensure you are paying attention, as they may not realize they are suffering symptoms until it is too late.?

2. Pay special attention to backyard pools.

You bought that backyard pool so the family could enjoy the summer months in style and comfort. Now it is your responsibility to keep your family safe! According to statistics released by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Center for Disease Control, there were an average of 283 fatal drownings of children five years and younger between 2005 and 2007. Many more children were treated for submersion related injuries in those same years. Many of those accidents resulted in permanent brain damage.

If you have an in-ground pool, make sure there is a fence around it to keep young children out. Make pool rules and ensure your children know them, regardless of the type of pool. Most pools come with "adult supervision required" warnings - those are not just for show. Ensure that you keep your family's pool a safe, enjoyable place this summer.?

3. Know that your grill is a major injury waiting to happen.

Even though adult males are, statistically speaking, the primary users of outdoor grills, it is children that are most likely to get injured. Though fatalities are rare, serious burns and carbon monoxide poisoning are both major concerns. Enjoy grilling this summer, but do it in an area away from any place the children are likely to play. Also, ensure proper ventilation. Never use an outdoor grill indoors!?

4. Playground equipment is fun, but it should also be safe.

Supervision is the key word! Backyard playground equipment can serve a small family for many years. In order to keep your children safe, proper maintenance is required. Tighten bolts, file down rough edges, dry slippery surfaces, and get rid of the old rusty chains. If you aren't going to be outside when your children are playing on the equipment, then keep yourself near a window so you can monitor them.?

5. Insect bites are not always simple "ouchies".

Many a child has suffered a small "ouchy" in the form of a bug bite. Mosquitoes, flies, bees, and wasps are just a few of the critters waiting to inflict a little pain on your little ones. However, flies and mosquitoes can carry diseases, and bees and wasps can cause serious injuries if the victim is allergic. Keep everyone safe by using an effective insect repellent, eliminating standing water so there are fewer breeding spots for mosquitoes, and taking care of wasp and bee problems before they escalate.?

6. Leaving your car windows down is asking for trouble.

Your car gets hot! The sun is beating down, and maybe you're starting to regret that dark color choice. It doesn't take long for a car sitting in the sun on an 80 degree day to get over 100 degrees inside with the windows up.

However, this is not an excuse to leave those windows down. Even if you are in the house and the car is parked in the driveway, leaving the windows down is akin to handing a thief a coupon to take anything they like out of your vehicle. Be smart, and leave those windows up!?

7. Just because you've gone out the back door, it doesn't mean your front door is safe.

8. Your garage might be your refuge, but that doesn't make it secure.

The garage, shed, or workshop is supposed to be a safe place to keep your tools and outdoor play things. You know this, and so do thieves. If you secure the rest of your home, make sure to secure your garage and your outbuildings. Tools are one of the primary targets of thieves. Don't make their job easier!?

9. Your kids are not the only children that want those expensive outdoor toys.

That nice bike, scooter, RC car, baseball glove, or go kart is your child's most prized possession. Make sure it does not become the prized possession of someone else! Teach your children to secure their belongings, just as you would secure your own. Leaving toys outside and unattended is a quick route to having to confront a?neighbour?about a small thief in their house, or even having your toys end up in the local pawn shop.?

10. Don't come home from summer vacation to find a summer nightmare.

Summer time is vacation time. If you are going away for an extended time, or even just a couple of days, alert your?neighbours?so they can keep an eye on your property. Ask them to report any suspicious?behaviour. Additionally, it is appropriate to alert the local police department so they can periodically stop by and make sure nothing has been disturbed. Light timers set at random intervals and a security system are also great ideas. Don't come home to a disaster. Ensure you come back to house that is the same as when you left.?

These are just a few of the concerns that summer brings. The key is to supervise your children, no matter what the activity, and use common sense to secure your home. A little extra attention now can lead to a safe guilt-free summer of fun!

Two proteins offer a 'clearer' way to treat Huntington?s disease

ScienceDaily (July 11, 2012) ? In a paper published in the July 11 online issue of Science Translational Medicine, researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have identified two key regulatory proteins critical to clearing away misfolded proteins that accumulate and cause the progressive, deadly neurodegeneration of Huntington's disease (HD).

The findings explain a fundamental aspect of how HD wreaks havoc within cells and provides "clear, therapeutic opportunities," said principal investigator Albert R. La Spada, MD, PhD, professor of cellular and molecular medicine, chief of the Division of Genetics in the Department of Pediatrics and associate director of the Institute for Genomic Medicine at UC San Diego.

"We think the implications are significant," said La Spada. "It's a lead we can vigorously pursue, not just for Huntington's disease, but also for similar neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's disease and maybe even Alzheimer's disease."

In HD, an inherited mutation in the huntingtin (htt) gene results in misfolded htt proteins accumulating in certain central nervous system cells, leading to progressive deterioration of involuntary movement control, cognitive decline and psychological problems. More than 30,000 Americans have HD. There are no effective treatments currently to either cure the disease or slow its progression.

La Spada and colleagues focused on a protein called PGC-1alpha, which helps regulate the creation and operation of mitochondria, the tiny organelles that generate the fuel required for every cell to function.

"It's all about energy," La Spada said. "Neurons have a constant, high demand for it. They're always on the edge for maintaining adequate levels of energy production. PGC-1alpha regulates the function of transcription factors that promote the creation of mitochondria and allow them to run at full capacity."

Previous studies by La Spada and others discovered that the mutant form of the htt gene interfered with normal levels and functioning of PGC-1alpha. "This study confirms that," La Spada said. More surprising was the discovery that elevated levels of PGC-1alpha in a mouse model of HD virtually eliminated the problematic misfolded proteins.

Specifically, PGC-1alpha influenced expression of another protein vital to autophagy -- the process in which healthy cells degrade and recycle old, unneeded or dangerous parts and products, including oxidative, damaging molecules generated by metabolism. For neurons, which must last a lifetime, the self-renewal is essential to survival.

"Mitochondria get beat up and need to be recycled," La Spada said. "PGC-1alpha drives this pathway through another protein called transcription factor EB or TFEB. We were unaware of this connection before, because TFEB is a relatively new player, though clearly emerging as a leading actor. We discovered that even without PGC-1alpha induction, TFEB can prevent htt aggregation and neurotoxicity."

In their experiments, HD mice crossbred with mice that produced greater levels of PGC-1alpha showed dramatic improvement. Production of misfolded proteins was essentially eliminated and the mice behaved normally. "Degeneration of brain cells is prevented. Neurons don't die," said La Spada.

PGC-1alpha and TFEB provide two new therapeutic targets for Huntington's disease, according to La Spada. "If you can induce the bioenergetics and protein quality control pathways of nervous system cells to function properly, by activating the PGC-1alpha pathway and promoting greater TFEB function, you stand a good chance of maintaining neural function for an extended period of time. If we could achieve the level of increased function necessary to eliminate misfolded proteins, we might nip the disease process in the bud. That would go a long way toward treating this devastating condition."

Rags-to-riches stories are pure Hollywood

Just 4 percent of people who grew up in the bottom fifth of the household income ladder?made it to the top fifth as adults, according to a new long-term study showing the limits of American mobility.

?The rags-to-riches story is more often found in Hollywood than in reality,? said Erin Currier, project manager with the Pew Charitable Trust's Economic Mobility Project, which prepared the report.

The analysis of household income across two generations, released Monday, found that very few people?born to poor parents?ended up rich, and?only 8 percent of people whose parents were in the top fifth of?households dropped to the bottom fifth as adults.

The study?found that the vast majority of American families are bringing in more money than their parents did, adjusted fror inflation,?than when they were the same age. But especially among the most poor, bigger paychecks aren't?often enough to push families? up the income ladder.

Most people raised in very rich and very poor households didn?t see their own circumstances change?much when they grew up. The report found that 70 percent of Americans whose parents were in the bottom fifth of the income ladder stayed below the middle as adults. And 63 percent of those born in the top fifth of the income ladder stayed above the middle when they became adults.

Those born in the?middle three-fifths of the income spectrum did have a higher likelihood of moving either up or down the ladder as adults.

In all, 35 percent of?American households could be classified as upwardly mobile, meaning they had a higher household?income than their parents at the same age and were at a higher point in the income distribution ladder than their parents had been.

People can make more money than their parents and still not rise up the income ladder because median income has increased at all levels.

Currier said that means many people may feel more successful than their parents ? maybe because they own a slightly bigger house or have a flat-screen TV ? but?aren?t much better off relative to other households today.

"The general public thinks there?s much more mobility than there actually is," said Lawrence Mishel, president of the Economic Policy Institute, who was not involved in the research.

Mishel also noted that many households have more income than their parents did at the same age because more women are working than in the previous?generation.

That's a contributing factor that the Pew report also acknowledged. Looking more narrowly just at men, they found that 59 percent of sons are earning more than their dads did at the same age.

The Pew analysis was based on the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, an in-depth look at family finances, using data from 1968 through 2009. The long-running study allowed the researchers to compare how adults are doing in comparison to how their parents were doing at the same point in their lives. The figures were adjusted for inflation, family size and age.

A separate look at total wealth found that half of Americans are wealthier than their parents were at the same age.

The fact that most households are bringing in more income than their parents but only half are wealthier is a little troubling, Currier said.

?Clearly families do have more money in terms of what?s coming in every month, but they don?t?have greater savings,?they don't have?greater assets - for the most part -?than their parents did,? she said.

One of the biggest ways individuals can improve their?circumstances relative to their?parents is to get a college degree.

The researchers found that a four-year degree triples a person?s chances of making it from the bottom to the top of the income ladder. College graduates also were more likely to be doing better than their parents were at the same age, in terms of both income and wealth.

The researchers also found that African-Americans were less likely than whites to outearn their?parents. The data was too limited to do a similar analysis of other racial and ethnic minorities.
